Using Keyword Research the Right Way

Hello hello Reader!

It's almost the end of the week and I got an excellent question from Hollie, a Creative Briefs member, that I wanted to highlight for you.

So I’m wondering how a character like Pokemon could be sold since it’s licensed?

This is a fantastic question, and it comes right after the new Brief just dropped which makes total sense. This month's Brief is on stickers and I know I don't have to tell you, stickers are insanely popular. Because of this, I spent extra time researching keywords for stickers and added them as one of the additional resources you get with the Creative Briefs subscription.

Of course, I remember seeing the Pokemon keyword and feeling hesitant to include it because Pokemon is a licensed character, as Hollie mentioned.

I DO NOT condone or encourage you to use or work with characters that are licensed. They are protected and while many people do it, it's not legal and not something you want to build your business on.

That said, it doesn't mean that you can't see that this keyword is popular and leverage that knowledge for extra eyeballs πŸ‘€ on your perfectly wonderful and totally legit designs!

Like what, you say?

Well, I can tell you what I'd do with that info if I were interested in ranking for that keyword.

  1. Look up Pokemon and study it. Pokemon is a universe of characters but when I first think of it, I do think of the main character which is cute and yellow.
  2. Think about how to create that essence in my own way/style. All the characters in Pokemon are quite cute and that gives you an opportunity to create your own "cute" characters. Kawaii anyone?
  3. Target the Keyword. Once I create a character that has similar characteristics, perhaps cute, fluffly, and yellow, I'd target the popular Pokemon keyword in my own listing that doesn't include a licensed character but my rather, a cuter πŸ˜‰ fluffy, yellow character.

Someone looking for that keyword might be looking for Pokemon specifically, but they might also be looking for characters that are similar, or even just something that's in that same realm. You just never know.

But you can bet that you wouldn't find out if it weren't for Creative Briefs looking out for you with that keyword research! πŸ˜‰

If you haven't joined Creative Briefs yet, you can totally jump in now. We just added an extra perk! So in addition to everything below, you now also get a recurring $5 credit to use in my digital shop (the Cherry Florals notepad templates seem to be a popular choice, so I'll be adding more in new styles soon!).

And of course, you get to be featured in the Spark-It-Place, which you can check out so you can see what your fellow creators are putting out into the world.
